. republican senator john mccain says it hasn't always been that way and it's time for both sides to sit down together. >> it's time now to sit across the table from one another rather than me saying what i could accept and wouldn't accept, why don't we have the president and our leaders, republican and democrat, sit across the table the way they did with bill clinton, the way they did with ronald reagan, and the way you get things done in washington, rather than saying hey, would you stick with grover norquist or would you not or would you address entitlements or not. i believe it's vital that we address the entitlements, who are the elephant in the room, but that would be up to the people who would be sitting across the table from each other. we cannot go over this fiscal cliff, no matter what people on both ends of the political spectrum say. i believe that there was a popularity poll in case you missed it where now members of congress rank just above car salespeople and i'm a great admirer of car salespeople, you know. it's not even astonishing and it angers me beyond belief, even journal

conclude this was premeditate or preplanned. >> reporter: republicans, led by john mccain, charged that the administration already knew that it was a planned terrorist attack. >> it is clear that the information that she gave the american people was incorrect. >> reporter: in november, rice testified behind closed doors on capitol hill, but her critices, like senator lindsey graham, were unrelenting. >> bottom line, i'm more disturbed now than i was before that 16th september explanation about how four americans died in benghazi, libya. ambassador rice, i think does not do justice to the reality at the time, and, in hindsight, clearly was completely wrong. >> reporter: last month, the president defended rice with a rare flash of public anger. >> when they go after the u.n. ambassador, apparently because they think she's an easy target, then they've got a problem. >> reporter: but today, in a phone conversation with the president, rice bowed out, saying as she told nbc news that she was saddened things had reached this point. >> ...because i didn't want to see a confirmation process that

from john mccain and lindsey graham and other key republican senators after her appearance on the sunday shows talking about the incident in benghazi. they were so angry because they say she disseminated false information about the causes of that attack. we all know the story there. we don't need to rehash it. she was given these talking points by the intelligence community. she was merely saying what they had instructed her to say. but the senators, these republican senators blamed her for using them when they say she knew they were false. she has clearance, security clearance, she had access to what had actually happened, or at least the best judgment for the classified material at that time. be that as it may, she made that trip up to capitol hill. john mccain, lindsey graham still rather forthright in their opposition, but really raised a red flag with the white house was a moderate like susan collins or bob corker expressing serious reservations. while not saying they would oppose any nomination were to it come. one of the strangest things that came out of the entire week of

and leader mcconnell, senator feinstein, john mccain. our thanks and appreciation to mrs. bush and madame secretary for taking time to be here today and the contributions to this effort and your commitment to advancing the cause of freedom and democracy in burma. i would be remiss if i did not mention someone who's not with us today, congressman tom lantos. tom, and his wife and staff, worked so hard on behalf of burma for so many years. i wish he were here to share this moment in history with us because i think today is an amazing day. today is an incredible. who would have thought that when this bill was introduced in the house in 2008 when aung san suu kyi was under house arrest that in a few short years she would be standing or sitting with us on u.s. soil receiving this honor as a member of the burmese parliament. back then we thought about granting the metal and extension which may have been the first time a person would have received in the history of the metal the congressional gold medal while in detention. who would have imagined this change was possible. who would have t

happening here, first of all, the camort of race baiting against john mccain led by richard wolf and tour, don't forget the accent mark. and the meeting with rice went badly and susan collins prides herself as a moderate thinks worse of you, you've done a bad job on the your presentation. and adam credo, the new website called the washington free beacon has millions of dollars in investments of companies linked to iran and rattled off the list and how she got confirmed as a u.n. ambassadorship and the romney campaign never noticing this as the issues of iran and weapons heating up and coming up in independent voices like the beacon, that maybe it will get-- it will derail her. >> jon: the media seem to be circling the wagons around here, judy. >> oh, yes, john mccain's racist theme has been picked up steam and regurgitated not just by people on nbc, "the washington post" editorial pointed out something astonishing to me, of the 90 people who signed the letter objecting to susan rice's nomination or potential nomination as secretary of state, 80 of them were male and about half of
